Women in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State raids shops across communities, seizing and destroying acholic drinks and any other related substances.
Some women in the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State have raided shops across various communities in the LGA, seizing and destroying alcoholic drinks and other related substances.
The occurred in Sabon Bariki and Bukuru Low Cost areas of the Gyel District and had a large number of women in attendance.
According to the women, these substances which they destroyed are making their husbands and men irresponsible.
The women, organized into groups, were supported by young girls, children, vigilantes, and other volunteers as they targeted shops and joints selling alcoholic products.
Some shop owners who heard about the impending crackdown quickly locked their shops and disappeared but the angry women promised to return with hasher measures.
The women made this over with the aid of their community and approval of their traditional rulers. They expressed their concern that these substances were leading to irresponsible behaviour in their husbands and men.
“These drinks are turning our men to irresponsible people. The drinks are weakening them; taking away their strengths and making them useless,” one of the women said.
“Our youths don’t have the strength to do menial jobs or farm to fend for themselves again. They spend most of their time in these drinking places
“Our husbands have also been weakened by the drinks, and they can no longer perform their conjugal duties in the night. Today, instead of having a man and a woman at home, we now have two women at home since our husbands cannot be called men any longer.”
