A 60 year old man identified as Samuel Maikut finds himself in police custody after visiting his in-laws to seek the hand of their daughter in marriage without fulfilling the necessary traditional requirement of bringing a dowry.
A 60-year-old Ugandan man, identified as Samuel Maikut, has been arrested by the police after visiting his in-laws to seek the hand of their daughter in marriage without fulfilling the traditional requirement of bringing a dowry.
This happened in Bukwo District when Maikut, a suitor, visited his in-laws’ residence without the traditional dowry, leaving the bride-to-be family in shocked and angered.
According to reports it is expected that Maikut, when visiting his lover’s parent to register his intention to marry their daughter is expected to bear the expenses of organizing the introduction ceremony.
After the bride’s family reportedly invested a considerable amount of $1200, in preparations for the ceremony, in anticipation that Maikut will arrival with four cows and three goats, as had been agreed upon he however came empty handed.
Adding to the disappointment, Maikut arrived late, appearing 20 minutes behind the scheduled time of 5 pm.
His tardiness, joined with his failure to bring the promised dowry, led to a tense atmosphere at the ceremony.
Upon interrogation, Maikut failed to give a satisfactory response to why he did not honour their agreement.
Fearing escalating tensions and a potential physical altercation, the local authorities were summoned, resulting in Maikut’s arrest by the police.
Maikut, in his defense, shifted blame onto his organizing team, citing challenges that he failed to elaborate on.
“I am sorry for what happened, but I am ready to discuss issues of compensation for the losses involved in the function,” the man said.
