Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, better known by his stage name Mayorkun, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and pianist who has established himself as a prominent figure in the African music scene.

He is popularly known for his songs such as “Eleko,” “Mama,” “Che Che,” “Bobo,” “True,” and “Geng”. A product of his carefully seasoned blend of genres combining Afro-pop, Afro-beat, Nigerian, and West African music.

His msical career started properly, after he released a captivating cover of Davido’s hit single “The Money.” His talent caught the attention of the prominent singer, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido, who discovered him on Twitter and subsequently signed him to his record label, DMW.

Mayorkun debut single “Eleko” which brought him to limelight was under DMW. The song quickly gained widespread acclaim. He continued to show his musical prowess, releasing hits after hit with albums and singles topping global charts. 

Even after Mayorkun departure from DMW, he continued to pursue his musical ambitions, signing with Sony Music West Africa division and dropping more hits such as his single “Let Me Know” and his second studio album, “Back In Office”.

Mayorkun Early Life

Mayorkun was born on March 23, 1994, in Osun State, Nigeria.[1] Which is also his state of origin. He was born into a christian family of 5 comprising his father, Mr. Sunday Adewale, his mother, Mrs. Toyin Adewale and his siblings Morenikejimi Adesewa Ajokemi, and Ayobami Samuel Adewale.[2]

Mayorkun’s parents, both deeply rooted in the arts, played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic inclinations.

His mother is a renowned Nollywood actress, and his father is an artist and movie producer.

His uncle, Segun Adewale is also a popular Yoruba music artist.[3] His younger sibling, Ayobami Samuel Adewale known as  Ayo Freeman,  is a member of the A&R (Artists and Repertoire) staff.[5]

His early education began at Living-Spring Montessori in Lagos, Nigeria, where he received his primary education and partly his secondary education. Following his secondary education, Mayorkun enrolled at the University of Lagos, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting.

After completing his accounting degree, Mayorkun briefly ventured into the banking industry. However, in 2016, he realized that the compensation was too poor for the amount of work required and decided to pursue his passion for music full-time.[7] 

Initially, his mother expressed disapproval of his decision, but his father wholeheartedly supported his musical aspirations.[8] 

Mayorkun’s  started by uploading song covers on social media, gaining a following and showcasing his talent. 

In 2016, Mayorkun’s cover of Davido’s 2015 hit single “The Money” caught the attention of the singer, Davido, who promptly followed Mayorkun on Twitter and Instagram and requested more of his original songs. 

Impressed by Mayorkun’s raw potential, Davido signed him to his record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). Interestingly, He was signed the same year, he decided to resign from his banking position.[9]

Under DMW’s label, Mayorkun released his debut single, “Eleko,” in 2016. The song garnered immense popularity, amassing millions of views on YouTube within days of its release.

Mayorkun continued to build on his momentum with a string of hit singles, including “Yawa,” “Sade,” “Che Che,” and “Mama.”

In 2017, Mayorkun embarked on a nationwide tour, performing in over 35 schools, bringing his music to a wider audience.

In October 2018, Mayorkun released the singles “Posh” and “Fantasy” featuring Olu Maintain, signaling the imminent arrival of his highly anticipated debut studio album, “The Mayor of Lagos.” The album, released on November 16, 2018, marked a significant milestone in Mayorkun’s career, showcasing his growth as an artist and his ability to deliver a soul-lifting message.[10]

Further cementing his success, “The Mayor of Lagos” debuted on the Billboard World Albums chart, peaking at number 15 on December 1, 2018.[12]

Mayorkun’s talent and popularity were further recognized in 2020 when he was among the esteemed artists scheduled to perform at the Vanguard Personality Awards at the Eko Hotel and Suites Convention Center in Victoria Island, Lagos.He shared the stage with renowned artists like Tekno and Timaya, Mayorkun continued to solidify his position as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated musical talents.[13]

In the same year, he also released his extended play, Geng, featuring artists like Vector, M.I. Abaga, Ycee and Sinzu.

In 2021, he announced his exit from Davido Music Worldwide, DMW during his second studio album release party and signed under Sony Music West Africa division, where he also released his single “Let Me Know” and his second studio album Back In Office in October 2021.[14]

In 2022, The singer released a number of singles including Certified Loner, Maitama (going), Alarm (mixed), and Oshey.

On 19 October 2023, he launched his second Ep, Love for Free comprising Thermo, Lose Control, My Energy after releasing his single Low-key on 13 October and For Daddy (mixed) the same 2023.[15]
