Outrage as Grammy plays Fela Kuti’s ‘Water’ instead of Tyla’s ‘Water’ while announcing her as winner

Social media users express their outrage as the organisers of the Grammy Awards play late Fela Kuti’s ‘Water ‘while announcing South African singer, Tyla’s ‘Water’ as Winner of the first Best African Music Performance Category.

During the 66th annual Grammy Awards, the organizers played the late Nigerian Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s track ‘Water’ while announcing South African singer, Tyla’s ‘Water’ as the winner of the first Best African Music Performance category.

On Sunday, 4th Febuary, the Recording Academy declared Tyla’s ‘Water’ as the recipient of the first-ever Best African Music Performance award.

Tyla won the category by beating tracks from Nigerian artists such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’

Following the announcement, Fela’s timeless classic, ‘Water No Get Enemy,’ was played instead of Tyla’s song.

This triggered criticism from fans and music critics, particularly in Nigeria, with many criticizing the Recording Academy for the “silly mistake.”
